How We Replaced 16 Damaged Sidewalk Slabs at 1325 Teller Avenue, Bronx

Our crew completed a full-frontage sidewalk replacement at 1325 Teller Avenue in the Bronx, home to the Community Church of Morrisania. The property is located in Bronx Community District 4, in the broader Morrisania/Concourse area. The church has served the local community from Teller Avenue for decades and hosts worship services, Bible study, youth and family ministries, and community activities.

Years of regular pedestrian use and general age-related deterioration had taken a toll on the sidewalk. Across the frontage, 16 concrete slabs covering approximately 400 square feet had become cracked, lifted, and crumbled in several areas.

These conditions created uneven walking surfaces and potential trip hazards directly outside a property that regularly receives congregation members, families, visitors, and other neighborhood pedestrians.

Our goal was straightforward: remove the deteriorated concrete and rebuild the frontage with a smoother, more consistent walking surface.

Preparing the Teller Avenue Sidewalk for Replacement

Before demolition began, the project required the appropriate coordination for work within the public sidewalk area.

Our team handled the NYC DOT Sidewalk Repair Permit and Sidewalk Closing Permit and coordinated an 811 utility mark-out before excavation. This allowed the crew to identify marked underground utilities and organize the sidewalk work before removing the existing concrete.

Unlike a tree-root repair, this project did not involve root pruning or a Parks tree-work permit based on the scope provided. The primary problem was deterioration associated with years of use and aging concrete rather than street-tree root displacement.

Once the pre-construction requirements were addressed, the work area was secured with temporary barriers and caution tape to separate pedestrians from the active construction zone.

Removing and Replacing 16 Deteriorated Sidewalk Slabs

The crew removed all 16 damaged slabs, covering approximately 400 square feet of sidewalk along the Teller Avenue frontage.

After demolition, the underlying areas were prepared to provide a stable base for the replacement concrete. Forms were set to establish the new slab boundaries and maintain consistent alignment across the frontage.

Fresh concrete was then placed and finished to create an even pedestrian surface. Control joints were incorporated between the new sidewalk sections, giving the completed frontage a clean and uniform appearance.

What Made This Bronx Sidewalk Project Different?

This project took place outside a long-established neighborhood church rather than a typical one- or two-family residence.

Another notable part of the job was its scale. Instead of patching a few isolated cracks, we replaced 16 complete slabs across roughly 400 square feet. Removing the deteriorated sections in full allowed the frontage to be restored as a more consistent sidewalk rather than relying on scattered surface repairs.

Project Outcome

The completed project transformed the deteriorated frontage at 1325 Teller Avenue into a newly poured concrete sidewalk with a smoother, more uniform walking surface.

The project cost was approximately $5,200, based on the roughly 400-square-foot repair area and the stated rate of $13 per square foot. The work included removal and replacement of the deteriorated sidewalk, new concrete installation, and the required permit and pre-construction coordination included within the project scope.

For the Community Church of Morrisania, the finished work provided a cleaner and more functional frontage for congregation members, community visitors, and pedestrians using this section of Teller Avenue.
